Dental sealant is a plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. The sealant bonds into the grooves of the teeth, forming a thin, but protective shield over the enamel of each tooth, usually premolars and molars.
Sealants are incredibly helpful because, although brushing and flossing can remove plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, they can’t always get into all the depressions and grooves of the back teeth. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas from forming decay.
