Inlays and Onlays are used when old dental fillings need to be removed or replaced.
- An inlay is similar to the original filling and fits inside the cusp tips (the top edges of the tooth).
- An onlayis similar to an inlay, except that it’s more extensive and incorporates a replacement for the tooth’s cusp by covering the area where the cusp would normally be. Dental crowns are onlays that completely cover the entire tooth.
There are Two Types of Inlay and Onlay: Direct and Indirect.
- During the direct procedures, Dr. Jose Lopez will remove the old filling and any new decay, and shape the tooth. Next, new resin will be placed onto the tooth, molded to the correct shape, and cemented down. This all takes place during only one visit to the office.
- During the indirect procedure, the filling and decayed will be removed. But this time, a mold or impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth will be made. This mold is sent to the lab and you will receive a temporary filling. On the second visit, the new inlay or onlay will be shaped and cemented down.
Once the inlay or onlay is placed, it will be require brushing and flossing, just like your natural teeth.
If you think a filling has fallen out or if your tooth has been sensitive for more than a few days, please give Dr. Jose Lopez a call to schedule an appointment!
