Quality Boulder Periodontics

Bone regeneration is a surgical procedure that regenerates the jawbone and tissues to correct any damage caused by periodontal disease. In the early stages of gum disease, non-surgical treatments can be used to remove tartar and clean the area so the tissues can repair themselves. However, when bone is lost it will not be able to repair itself on its own. Bone regeneration can also be an option for patients with missing teeth or those who do not qualify for dental implants.

How Bone and Tissue Regeneration Works

When you first come in for your bone regeneration, any plaque or tartar found beneath the gum line will be removed. Biocompatible membranes will then be placed between the jawbone and the gums, causing a barrier between the two. This will prevent the gums from growing into the bone tissue as it heals.

There are two types of bone regeneration:

  • Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR): This procedure is the one described above and is most often used to regenerate bone in order to support a dental bridge, dental implant, or other form of falsetooth. GBR can also be used to prevent any of your other teeth from be being lost.

  • Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR): This procedure is similar to GBR, however GTR is more focused on regenerating the soft tissues that support your teeth. GTR is used to repair damaged periodontal structures including bone, periodontal ligaments and connective tissue attachments.

The earlier you receive bone regeneration, the better! Bone regeneration can prevent you from losing any more teeth or damaging any more soft tissues. Gum disease cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Always remember to practice good oral hygiene and visit Dr. Jose Lopez, your Boulder periodontics provider, for regularly cleanings and checkups.
